Carbohydrate-Active enZymes (CAZymes) are enzymes involved in the synthesis, metabolism, and transport of carbohydrates and include glycoside hydrolases (GHs), glycosyltransferases (GTs), polysaccharide lyases (PLs), carbohydrate esterases (CEs) and carbohydrate binding modules (CBMs). CAZymes are organized in families in the continuously updated database CAZy (www.cazy.org, see below). CAZy was established in 1999 and provides access to a sequence-based family classification linking the sequence to the specificity and 3D structure of the enzymes that assemble, modify and breakdown oligo- and polysaccharides. The CAZy database is an invaluable research tool with respect to the ever increasing amount of genomic information relating to carbohydrate metabolism. CAZy nomenclature achieved rapid adoption by the research community and has become a norm when describing CAZymes. The CAZy database is presently coupled with the CAZypedia online encyclopedia (www.cazypedia.org), which was launched in June 2009 and is a web site driven by the scientific community that studies CAZymes. As of 2014, CAZy is developed by the Glycogenomics group at AFMB, a research centre affiliated with the French National Centre for Scientific Research and Aix-Marseille University.
