Description: Carbenicillin disodium is a carboxypenicillin antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell-wall synthesis (peptidoglycan cross-linking) by inactivating transpeptidases on the inner surface of the bacterial cell membrane. It is analog to ampicillin, with a wide antimicrobial spectrum against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and Pseudomonas. Carbenicillin is recommended as a substitute for ampicillin at the same concentration in molecular biology applications. Used for selection of ampr transformed cells. Also can be used to study the role of penicillin-sensitive transpeptidases in cell wall biosynthesis.
