The bases most commonly used as catalysts are tertiary amines such as N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylenediamine (TEMED). The free radicals will cause acrylamide and bis-acrylamide to polymerize to form a gel matrix, which can be used for separating macromolecules by size.
