Worldwide, MRSA is one of the most frequent human pathogens of nosocomial and community infections. S. aureus has a remarkable ability to acquire resistance to antibiotics, which has major implications for the therapeutic options of this pathogenic bacterium. Culture-based detection of MRSA requires the isolation of pure colonies followed by antibiotic susceptibility testing, and this process can take up to 72 hours. With the rapidity at which MRSA infections can spread, especially in healthcare settings where carriers are common, the capability of providing results of MRSA nasal carriage on the day of admission represents a definite advantage for infection prevention programs. Application of fast real-time PCR-based assays for MRSA screening from nasal swabs can decrease turnaround time to 1 to 2 hours.
