Culture-based detection of MRSA requires the isolation of pure colonies followed by antibiotic susceptibility testing, and this process can take up to 72 hours. With the rapidity at which MRSA infections can spread, especially in healthcare settings where carriers are common, the capability of providing results of MRSA nasal carriage on the day of admission represents a definite advantage for infection prevention programs.
